Max Miller

Max Miller, a native Texan, was graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1957.  He was a member of the Naval ROTC program where he was commissioned Ensign, USN, and assigned to the destroyer USS Collett (DD 730). The last 2 years of his tour he was Engineering Officer aboard the Collett.  After his days on active duty, he spent another 23 years in the active Naval Reserve and retired as a Captain.  Tours included commanding officer of reserve units as well as the State of Texas Adjutant General Staff as Navy Liaison Officer.

After a tour in the US Navy he returned to graduate school at the University of Texas where he received MA and PhD (mathematics) degrees.  He spent his professional career working in fields of geophysical research and computer software engineering.  Max spent 10 years with Geophysical Services, Inc. and Texas Instruments.  Max was employed at Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, Princeton University for 3 years and for 4 years at the University of Texas where he taught Computer Science courses and did research at the Applied Research Laboratory.

In 1980 Dr. Miller joined Cray Research.  At Cray he was involved in marketing Cray Supercomputers to energy companies, classified government installations, and to supercomputer centers such at the one at the University of Texas.  After leaving Cray Research he consulted for supercomputer users and prospective users.

Since he retired, Max Miller has been an active in supporter of the University of Texas Naval ROTC program, working with the UT NROTC Alumni as well as the Officers and staff of the UT NROTC unit.  He is currently Chairman of the Board of the UT NROTC Midshipmans Foundation, a foundation that provides scholarships to NROTC Midshipmen at the University of Texas.  He is a National Director the Navy League of the United States (NLUS) and he served two terms as National Vice President of NLUS.  He is also President of the Board of the Foundation for Biblical Studies, a foundation which supports the teaching and research in biblical history at the University of Texas in the Departments of Religious Studies and Classics.

Max and his wife, Sylvia, were recently awarded the Pro Bene Meritis award, the highest award given by the College of Liberal Arts, the University of Texas at Austin (UT), for their support of Liberal Arts (This includes Naval ROTC.) at the UT.

Max Miller is married to Sylvia Seale and they have two adult children, Cynthia Miller Rindy and Mark Miller, both of Austin, Texas.
